NASCAR Cup Series standings leader Martin Truex Jr. ready to return to WGI
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) - NASCAR weekend is in full swing at Watkins Glen International with the Go Bowling at the Glen Cup Series race set for Sunday at 3 PM. WENY Sports caught up with Cup Series standings leader, Martin Truex Jr. on Friday.
So far this season, Truex has 3 wins, 9 top fives, and 14 top-ten finishes. He can clinch the regular season championship with 56 points ahead of second place following Watkins Glen.
"Last year was a really tough season for our team just learning the new car and I think our whole group at Toyota as a whole were behind the eight ball a little bit there but just a lot of hard work by everyone and especially inside of the 19 team just figuring things out and this year just really hitting the ground running with confidence," Truex Jr. said.
Truex Jr. has performed well at WGI in the past with a win in 2017 along with 7 top fives and 10 top ten finishes. Now, he has his eyes on potentially clinching the regular season title.
"It'd be unbelievable if we could lock it up this weekend and not have to worry about Daytona but feeling good about the lead we have right now and what we've been able to do at Watkins Glen in the past, hopefully, we can repeat that and just have a good solid race and get a lot of points," Truex said. "I think with the way they took the stage breaks out of road courses helps as well as long as we can do a good job tomorrow and qualify well, I think it'll be a huge deal."
