2PM UPDATE 8/21/23: New York State Police on Monday afternoon provided an update on the situation during a press conference at the barracks in Bath.

State Police say the situation began to unfold on Sunday, at approximately 8PM. Troopers responded to a call for a domestic situation at a home on Roosevelt Avenue. According to police, a 51-year-old man had discharged a gun inside the residence, before barricading himself inside. A woman involved in the incident was able to escape the home safely.

Police say the suspect continued to fire gunshots inside and outside the home, including at law enforcement on scene, who returned fire. Residents in the immediate area were ordered to shelter in place, and crisis negotiators and the state police Special Operation Response Team (SORT) responded to the scene.

State police say during negotiations that continued for several hours, and shortly after 1AM, the suspect went outside into the backyard with a shotgun, and failed to comply with commands of police. They say the suspect fired his gun in the direction of troopers, who returned fire, hitting the suspect in the lower leg.

The suspect was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment, where his condition is listed as stable. He remains in state police custody in the hospital.

State police were assisted on scene by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, Steuben County CERT team, Bath Police Department, Bath Ambulance, Bath AMR, Bath Fire Department, Bath VA Emergency Services, and LifeNet.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and declined to identify the suspect at this time.
