OWEGO, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Owego Fire Department has been receiving quite a few calls about gas leaks. As of 3:45 p.m. this afternoon, the fire department had received 15 calls about gas smells in homes and businesses.

After the Village of Owego contacted NYSEG about this problem, NYSEG confirmed that they had adjusted the "odorizor" and put too much smell into the gas.

The company confirmed that there is no potential danger to the public and the gas mains are working fine.

Despite the fact that there is no reason for residents to panic, the Mayor of Owego Mike Baratta still wants people to report on any issues they are experiencing.

"But...definitely...if they smell gas and don't call 9-1-1...call NYSEG and report it,” he said. “They'll come find the link and get it fixed.”

Although there is no danger, Baratta said the smell of gas could always be a sign of a problem. The safest thing to do at this time is report it and have it checked out.
