ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - The Cornell Cooperative Extension has announced a Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in a press release on Monday, September 18th. This free event is only scheduled for Chemung County residents on Saturday, October 14th, and requires pre-registration.

The registration period ends at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11th; residents can call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 607-734-4453. 

While electronics will not be accepted at the waste collection event, a large range of other items are on the accepted list.

The items include but are not limited to, ammonia, antifreeze, arts and crafts supplies, household batteries, bleach, brake fluid, cesspool cleaners, drain cleaners, driveway sealers, dry cleaning fluids, engine and radiator flushes, and floor cleaners.

Additionally, fluorescent lights (bulbs and tubes), gasoline, herbicides, insect sprays, mercury and items containing mercury, metal polishes, mothballs, muriatic acid, latex and oil-based paints, old chemistry set supplies, oven cleaners, paint thinners and pesticides will also be accepted.

Other accepted items include photo chemicals, pool chemicals, radiator cleaners, rodent killers, rust preventatives, sealants, solvents, transmission fluid, wood preservatives, and wood strippers.
