ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Wednesday morning, two marijuana sticker shops in the city of Elmira were raided by state and local authorities. Authorities raided two different '420 Novelties locations, one on Pennsylvania Avenue and the other on West Water Street.

“I just walked out the door and saw it happening. We have been going to city council meetings and county meetings for months now,” said Sid Whitney, director of the Chemung County Family Fitness Center, which is across the street from the Pennsylvania Avenue location.

The New York state Office of Cannabis Management put a notice in both storefronts, notifying the public marijuana was seized from the location, and the business was ordered to stop illegal activity.  The businesses are accused of selling unlicensed marijuana, which is only allowed by a licensed dispensary.

This isn't the first time a 420 Novelties location has been targeted. In May, the town of Horseheads revoked the operating permit for its previous location on Lake Street.

Whitney said after going to numerous city and county meetings, she and her staff were waiting for this to happen.

“I believe this place of establishment should not be across from our community center [and] our senior center. I’m not opposed to it. I just believe…it has to happen on a good level,” said Whitney.

Earlier this year, Governor Kathy Hochul promised the Office of Cannabis Management would start cracking down more on unlicensed marijuana gift shops. The Office of Cannabis Management has raided sticker stores across the Southern Tier, including Ithaca, Corning, and Waverly in recent months.

WENY reached out to the owner of 420 Novelties but haven’t heard from him as of 6:20 Wednesday night. Employees who were outside the Pennsylvania Avenue location during the raid declined to be interviewed.
