(WENY) -- October marks breast cancer awareness month. More than 300,590 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2023. This year 18,780 women in New York will be diagnosed with the disease.

Since 1989 the breast cancer mortality rate has dropped 43% because of early detection of the disease and improved patients.

The American Cancer Society wants women to know their greatest tool in protecting themselves and loved ones is to get regular screenings for breast cancer.

The ACS recommends women at average risk should begin regular screening at age 45 and follow up every year until age 55.

Women at high risk should receive a mammogram starting at age 30.

Right now there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today including those who have completed treatment and those still undergoing treatment.

Breast cancer affects men too and they should also follow these tips in getting regular screenings.

There are two types of mammograms. You can receive 2D and 3D X-rays.

The ACS recommends the 3D mammogram because it takes photos of the breast from many different angles offering a more clear and efficient detection of the cancer.

Locally, Cayuga Cancer Center and Schuyler hospital are hosting breast exam Saturday from 8 AM to 3 PM. To schedule an appointment click here
