HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Construction could soon begin on a multi-million dollar solar-farm in Horseheads, after the Chemung County Industrial Development Agency approved the financial incentives for the Catalyze Breesport Road Microgrid LLC project.

The solar-farm will cover about 25 acres of land, cost about $6,600,000, and would be a 3.5 mega-watt facility.

"A mega-watt instantaneously powers about 750 homes. So, 3.5 mega-watts you're talking over 2,000 homes that it could power," said Executive Director for the IDA, Joe Roman.

Roman said the electricity that will be generated will go to the grid, so it'll go to Chemung County but all over the Southern Tier and other locations. He also said Catalyze, the company building the solar farm, can begin building soon as long as they have all of the approvals needed to start.

"Typically these projects are constructed under a year, so my anticipation [is] by [the] first or second quarter of next year, it should be completed," said Roman.

In addition to getting the necessary approvals, Catalyze has an agreement with the Town of Horseheads. Roman said the town did a host benefit agreement, which is $2,500 per mega-watt and it's $8,000 per mega-watt with the IDA.

Multiple solar panels will be located at 625 Breesport Road in Horseheads and 81 Jackson Creek Road.
