BIG FLATS, NY (WENY) -- Residents can learn how to be better prepared for severe weather events and disasters at an upcoming training event in Big Flats.

The Chemung County Office of Civil Defense is teaming up with the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps to provide a one-hour training program. The goal is to educate people on what to do in various severe weather events.

The program helps provide people with the tools and resources to prepare for both natural or man-made disasters, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible. Topics to be covered include developing an emergency family plan, and stocking up on supplies. Participants will receive one family preparedness kit.

The event will be held on January 17th at 6PM at the Big Flats Community Center. All participants must register in advance by visiting www.prepare.ny.gov. The event is open to any resident of New York state.
