MANSFIELD, PA (WENY) -- The Mansfield Municipal Authority is warning residents to boil their tap water before using it. This warning comes after a failure at a water treatment plant.

If you live in the Mansfield Borough, this means you need to boil your water for one full minute before using it for drinking, brushing your teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice from the Mansfield Municipal Authority.

There was a failure of a filtering or disinfecting system at the water treatment plant. This means there is a higher chance that bacteria, viruses, and parasites could be in the Municipal Water System.

Businesses in town, like Conspiracy Coffee Co. & Bakery, are taking the proper measures to keep their businesses open and their customers safe.

“...just boiling our water,” Thad Compton, the owner of the Mansfield coffee shop. “We’re fortunate enough that we have a big pour over...that we can do the coffee that way...obviously that’s what we depend on.”

Compton said the dishes are being washed with boiled water, as well.

Drinking water that has not been properly boiled could cause health issues such as diarrhea, nausea, cramps, and headaches even if you are in perfect health. If you feel symptoms, contact a health care provider.

WENY News reached out to Mansfield Borough officials for an update, and they said the status of the water has not changed. They added that they do not know when it will be safe to drink again.

WENY News will continue to follow this story and keep you updated when the boil water advisory has been lifted.
