CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) - After a successful 2023 season, Corning Community College softball is hungry to get back in the game. CCC is set to take the field next Saturday, 2/17 as they travel to take on Lackawanna.

The Red Barons have made it to the NJCAA championship the last three years but falling in all three games.

With only three returners and two transfers, this year marks a new journey for CCC as the rest of the roster is first year players.

"The kids are hungry, the kids are working really hard, the young ladies are working very hard," said head coach Stacy Johnson. "Super excited to be outside again today, two days in a row so this is in February it's unheard of. We're going to be young this year, we're going to have a little bit of a different look to us, but we look to be, we have some depth at all positions, a little bit of pop in our bat but we will definitely be different. It might take this group a little longer to get acclimated to the higher pace of play but I have high high hopes for them."

Ithaca native, Jenna Plue said, "We definitely have a really strong bond with each other. We're definitely going to be playing together as a team and not as individuals which is always really really nice to have that cohesiveness. I think communication's going to be big for us and I feel like our defense is going to be big for us as well."

"I think we have the talent. I think it's definitely going to take us a few games, it did last year to just get the groove in with everybody," said infielder Lily Callahan. "Luckily we're able to get outside, last year we didn't have this opportunity so a lot of hard work and just having faith in each other. I think if we have faith then we'll be fine."

The Red Barons went 38-10 overall last season, going on a 27 game winning streak at one point.
