Highlighting work by local artists in Horseheads
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Local artists are getting the chance to have their artwork featured in the community.
The Horseheads Historical Society features local artists creations on the walls. In collaboration with the Elmira Regional Art Society, also known as ERAS, artists of all mediums get to show off their skills. There was reception on Sunday afternoon for the two newest featured artists.
"We bring in noted artists to teach, and what we do is we bring our art to the community. Here is a perfect example, we have two artists who are represented with their works on the wall behind us, and every couple of months, it switches out and different artists come in and go out. So, you don't have to always go to a museum to see the art. You can come to different places in the community we have," said Barbara Kurcoba, a member of ERAS and the Horseheads Historical Society.
Diane Brownell and Laura Matson are featured artists this time around. Brownell specializes in animal portraits, while Matson does watercolors and photography. They say this is a unique opportunity for artists, and one they are grateful to have.
"We love it, because it expands a lot of our horizons as far as who we can sell the artwork to or who is interested in our art or might be. So it's very important that we get our names out there and tell people about we're here if you want to come visit," said Brownell.
Art means something different to everyone, and many say its important to share with the community.
"It just gives people a sense of something that they're missing. When I started painting again, it was just like a friend I hadn't seen in years. it was so comforting for me, and completed me in a way I cant really explain," said Matson.
The artwork will be up at the Historical Society for a while, and they are open for visitors to check it out. ERAS and the Horseheads Historical Society features artists at other times as well.
The Horseheads Historical Society is located at 312 W Broad St, Horseheads, NY 14845.
