HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Meet Cocoa Puff, WENY’s Pet of the Week from the Horseheads Community Animal Shelter.

Cocoa Puff is a 12-year-old toy poodle who is looking for a new home with owners who would be open to taking in an older dog.

Her handler, Mojave Moffett, says she gets along with people, but gets separation anxiety when people are gone so she would best fit with someone who is home most of the time.

“She does get a little anxious, especially, like I said, when people are gone. So, she does find a lot of comfort in her big, soft, fluffy bed and a lot of stuffed animal type toys that she can cuddle with.”

Moffett says the most important thing to note for anyone interested in adopting Cocoa Puff is to be patient with her.

“They have definitely kind of been through a lot already and may be used to certain routines and certain things that are not going to be there in their new home or they have to get used to, used to a new routine. So that could be a big change for them so just be patient with figuring that out as well.”

However, Moffett says she is doing well for her age and is up to date with her vaccinations and does not appear to have any major medical issues and recommends foods geared towards dogs that are older in age.

“They do make some senior type diets for dogs that can be kibble or wet food. They are branded towards seniors that can have different nutrients and things like that, that do a little bit better on their systems. She currently also eats small breed food, so it is a little bit easier for her to chew.”
