ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The “Great American Eclipse” is only a few weeks away. While a lot of people will be heading outside to watch this astrological phenomenon, others might be on the road and unaware of what is going on.

The Twin Tiers is in the path of totality during the near-total solar eclipse. People who are looking up can expect to catch the peak of the eclipse between 3:15 to 3:30 p.m.

Aside from being safe and paying attention on the road, Chemung County Sheriff William Schrom said drivers should be ready to turn on their headlights due to low visibility.

But Sheriff Schrom said the biggest concern law enforcement has is people stopping their cars to get a glimpse, instead of pulling over in a safe location.

“The other problem is those who aren’t stopping ... but gawking themselves and getting distracted,” he said. “There’s always that potential of an accident so we encourage people not to be staring up at the sun while you’re driving.”

Sheriff Schrom also said people should not wear anything on their face when they are driving, that will impede the ability to see clearly.

A near-total solar eclipse also means a lot of tourists are expected to pass through the region to witness the astronomical event. Sheriff Schrom said the sheriff’s department is anticipating a lot of traffic around April 8th. He added there will be a heavy police presence a day or two before, on, and after the event.
