WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - Waverly's Mackenzie LaForest has made history for the Wolverine's girls wrestling program. Now, she is set to compete at the next level.

LaForest signed on Thursday to wrestle at Division II D'Youville University.

Mackenzie is the first female wrestler in school history to sign to the collegiate level. LaForest captured a state title which is the first in school history and she is the first two-time Section IV champion. Mackenzie finished her high school career with a record of 78-22 over six years and during the first four years, she wrestled against boys as well as girls.

LaForest plans to major in Nursing at D'Youville and will join women's wrestling program that finished 9-8 overall and placed 25th out of 49 teams at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships.

After putting pen to paper, LaForest talked about the excitement of taking her talents to the next level.

"I'm very excited, I've always wanted to wrestle in college since sixth grade when I actually started wrestling," LaFrorest said. "I feel like I can go far at the college level and I'm hoping one day to go to the Olympics."

LaForest also discussed why D'Youville is the right fit for her.

"I know a couple of people on the team, probably most of them being nurses going through the program so they can help me out if I ever need something and the tutoring that I have time to do while going to the college," she added.

LaForest will join the D'Youville women's wrestling program in the fall.
