BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Phones, computers, cars; almost every product used in daily life involves some sort of manufacturing.  Corning Community College is trying to shed some light on the manufacturing industry, and at the Manufacturing Open House on Wednesday night, people got an inside look at what goes into the field.

"The world revolves around manufacturing. It wouldn't be possible to do any of the things we do without manufacturing," said Gracelin Geinitz, a manufacturing student at CCC.

The Machine Tool Technology Program at CCC was recently re-imagined, and the open house aimed to show that.  Featuring hands on labs and working with equipment, instructors say the program is an asset to the community.

"We've got an educational program that is designed primarily to serve the local community. We have a ton of local manufacturing in the area, luckily the Southern Tier is still blessed with [companies] like Siemens Energy, the Hilliard Corporation, Hardinge, I could go on and on. The goal is to show that, not only is there a great program for people to come and take, to come see and learn a lot, but you will be gainfully employed afterword," said Dan Moretti, the head of the Machine Tool Technology Program at CCC.

Local companies set up booths at the open house.  The Southern Tier is a manufacturing hub, and companies say they are looking to hire local talent.

"I think in the grander scheme of things, it's really introducing manufacturing to the younger generation," said Brent Sharket, from Hardinge Inc.  "It's great to see the whole conglomerate of different companies, you have Kennedy Valve, you have Hilliard, you have Hardinge, [and] we're coming together. We're really meshing that relationship together and focusing on manufacturing in the future in the Southern Tier, because it is it's important to each and every one of us."

Students get hands on experience at CCC, running equipment and building intricate pieces with high powered machines.  Some say its been an asset to their careers.

"Being in the STEM Academy, I did an internship with Hilliard for about a year, which counted for my co-op here, so it gave me on-the-job experience as well as actual real-world things that I've had to do," added Geinitz.
