ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Police Department released the results of an anonymous crime survey on Thursday, March 28th designed to help the department figure out future priorities. In total, over 1500 people responded, and according to the survey, the top crime concern in the City at 61 percent is the number of shooting incidents.

"The anonymous feedback received through the online survey will assist the Elmira Police Department as well as the Chemung County Gun Involved Violence
Initiative (G.I.V.E.) in their efforts to deter violent crime and ensure the safety and security of the community by providing exemplary law enforcement services," said Sergeant William Goodwin in prepared statement.

Along with shooting incidents, 59 percent of respondents said violent crime like robbery, assault and homicide were listed as a high priority for residents. Property crimes and drug related crimes also made it high on the list.

Going forward, respondents said they want to see a greater emphasis on drug and gun crime intervention, including additional vacant residence checks and an increase in undercover operations.

"The Department would like to thank the community members who responded to the survey and provided honest answers," said Goodwin.
