HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Horseheads Village Board of Trustees accepted a proposed budget for 2024-2025 at its meeting Thursday night. The tentative budget would raise property taxes in the Village by 2.6%, at a total tax levy of 7.5%.

The budget plan could raise taxes by 16 cents for every one thousand dollars of assessed home value. The village of Horseheads' current tax rate $6.16 per thousand dollars of assessed home value. If the proposed budget is accepted for 2024-2025, residents will pay $6.32 for every thousand dollars of home value. According to county data cited during the meeting the average home value in Horseheads is $141,000. That would result in property owners paying $65 more on their tax bill, on average.

During the Board meeting Thursday, Trustees cited contractual payments and planned fixes as the reason for the planned increase.

The budget has not been officially voted on by village trustees. A public hearing on the planned budget is scheduled for April 18 at the Horseheads Village Board of Trustees meeting at 6 p.m.
