ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY)--According to the National Children's Alliance, more than 600,000 children are abused in the U.S. each year.  The Glove House in Elmira recognized 'Child Abuse Prevention Month'  with a Pinwheel Planting at its Headquarters today.

''Today we planted pinwheels. Pinwheels have become symbolic as an opportunity to designate the awareness of Child Abuse Prevention. We try to educate the public to make sure that this is a rare issue, '' said Dr. Keith McGriff of Glove House

The blue and silver pinwheels symbolize 'Child Abuse Prevention' as they show the playfulness, joy, and a childhood free from trauma and fear. Today's ceremony included planting of dozens of pinwheels at the front of their property.

''When you see the pinwheels spinning, that is about opportunity. It is about opportunity for individuals, particularly children. As it spins around, it needs guidance, direction, love, and support. The pinwheel brings this attention,'' said Dr. Keith McGriff.

President McGriff said that about 22% of abuse cases happen with babies under the age of one. Additionally, physical abuse is the most common form of abuse in all age groups.

''Children deserve to be protected. As professionals, we are mandated reporters, but if you suspect there is child abuse going on -please say something. There is the National State hotline."
