WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY)-- The New York Park, Recreation and Historical Preservation is marking their 100th year of existence. Members were at Watkins Glen State Park preparing for the upcoming season.

''We are celebrating the diversity of our system, but we are celebrating the diversity of what we do. We are looking to open up the rim trail, but before we do there is a lot of work that goes in looking for loose rocks and checking over the cliff phase,'' said Randy Simons, Acting Commissioner for NY Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation.

The steady rains did not stop the rock climbing crew today from testing and making sure the rocks at the Watkins Glen State Park are steady and safe enough before the rIm trails open next month. The process of reviewing the cliff phase takes approximately five weeks.

''We're knocking down loose debris that occurs naturally with the natural freeze-thaw cycles, so the work we do now is very important. Please do not enter the Gorge until we are done,'' said Andrew Chouinard, Rope Access Coordinator for NY State Parks.

Randy Simons said that he hopes everyone comes out and enjoys the park this year. Last year, the park saw a record number of visitors.

''All year long we will be celebrating the park's centennial. It is a look back at the past one hundred years and a look forward to the next one hundred years. We have several initiatives to share your story. We are asking our visitors to share their story,'' said Andrew Chouinard.

The Watkins Glen State Park offers campgrounds, swimming, and hiking opportunities.
