A nearby Horseheads firefighter and a New York State Police officer were the first responders at the scene and confirmed that two kids were trapped. The car accident was complicated by a damaged building overhang, which was hanging over the crash site.

When officials got to the scene, they called in additional help. One child was airlifted to a trauma center. The second child was transported to a trauma center by ambulance.

Officials confirmed that no other individuals required medical transport.

New York State Police's preliminary investigation found that a 2012 Toyota Highland, driven by Debra Kenyon, 73, of Horseheads, hit a 2010 BMW. Officials say the Highlander then accelerated through the four-way intersection which caused a secondary crash with a parked 2010 Toyota Rav4 in the Last Stand parking lot.
