SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WENY) -- President Joe Biden made a stop in Syracuse on Thursday to announce that billions of dollars are being invested into semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New York State and Idaho. Micron Technology plans to open a future “megafab” plant in Clay, New York.

“$6.1 billion in CHIPS funding...paired with $125 billion from Micron to build these facilities, here, in New York,” President Biden said.

The billions of dollars in federal funding aims to grow the development of semiconductor manufacturing. The money will be used to invest in two Micron fabs, one of which is in Clay, New York, right outside of Syracuse.

“In all...it’s going to create 70,000 jobs across both states, at least 9,000 of which are construction jobs...11,000 manufacturing jobs,” President Biden said. “Tens of thousands...up and down the supply chain...including 9,000 permanent Micron manufacturing jobs, right here in Clay.”

White House officials said this private investment is the largest in New York State’s history. In addition to the CHIPS funding, Micron officials said they plan to invest more than $100 billion to create its Clay megafab site, creating close to 50,000 jobs over the next 20 years.

“Highly skilled new jobs we’re creating,” President Biden said. “We’re bringing employers, unions, community colleges, high schools...and workforce hubs where folks learn the skills hands-on.”

The president said building America’s economy from the middle out and the bottom up is going to strengthen an “economic comeback” for cities across the country, like Syracuse.

“American manufacturing is back,” President Biden said. “Factories are being built across the country. The great American comeback story...bringing new jobs, new businesses, new hope.”

President Biden said his announcement is part of his commitment to building up the economy, strengthening national security, and investing in the American people.
