BEAVER DAMS, N.Y. (WENY) -- After State Route 414 was closed for almost ten hours on Saturday, police say they are searching for a potentially armed suspect.

The Schuyler County Sheriff's Office says they were dispatched around 7:45 a.m. to Mill Hill Road in the Town of Dix for reported gunfire. When they got there, police said there was an ongoing situation, and an investigation led them to State Route 414 in the town of Catlin.  Sheriff Kevin Rumsey told WENY News that no one was injured in that incident.

Police said they are searching for 40 year-old Rexford Smith of Catlin, also known as 'Ely'.  They said his whereabouts are unknown, and he could possibly be armed with a firearm.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Schuyler County Sheriff's office art 607-535-8222. The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office said they are currently working to gather additional information, and the area remains an active crime scene as law enforcement continues to investigate and apprehend the suspect involved. 

Sheriff Kevin Rumsey said he believes this was an isolated incident, and there is no direct threat to the public.

Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, was assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Watkins Glen Police Department, and the
New York State Police.  Several fire departments and EMS teams were also scene.
