ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Tompkins County is moving forward with a plan to expand high speed internet. The legislature approved a resolution to develop infrastructure to eventually expand broadband access to over 1,200 locations in the county currently without access.

The County Legislature commissioned Point Broadband, an internet company, to complete a $100,000 engineering study. The study would allow the county to access New York State funds to develop the infrastructure.

New York State has been expanding internet to more rural areas of the state in recent years through the ConnectALL program. The initiative has injected $1 billion in new public and private investments in broadband access.

According to state data, the program helped lay more than 21,000 miles of fiber, giving 256,000 more customers internet access.

No word on when the internet could be expanded to new customers.
