AVOCA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Since 1998 -- an organization called "The Ramp Guys" have volunteered their time and skills to help senior citizens in need all across Steuben County. Earlier today they celebrated another milestone, completing their 700th ramp.

Over the past 26 years, the Ramp Guys have been constructing ramps for senior citizens all across Steuben County. The ramps have helped senior citizens regain their mobility and their autonomy, as well as allowing them to safely leave and enter their homes.

They come from all corners of Steuben County and from all walks of life.  Most of them are retirees dedicating countless hours to helping neighbors in need.

"This is what we love to do. We take two days out of every week and we build these ramps for people. To hit 700 is just something absolutely monumental, it's a great feeling for all of us, that we've done this," remarked Ramp Guys volunteer Michael Wasserman.

Typically the Ramp Guys will coordinate a ten person crew for a project that takes roughly 8 hours. Today over 20 volunteers supported the project, which spanned over 60 feet upon completion.

"These volunteers have such a great time, they pick on each other and the fellowship is just marvelous. The pay we get is just fantastic, because we're volunteers. All we got to do is see somebody come down that ramp, so that they don't have to worry about falling and getting hurt. That's our pay right there," said Ramp Guys coordinator Glenn Davis.

Through financial backing from local partner businesses and the Office of the Aging, the ramps are built with no cost to the recipients. It's a life-changing operation for these families.

"It's unbelievable, I can get outside other than the porch now," said beneficiary Lois Cagle.

Through their partnerships with the office of the aging as well as many Steuben County local businesses, the Ramp Guys have been able to help families all across the county by allowing some of the older members of their family to be able to safely leave their homes through the construction of 700 ramps.

If you or someone you know thinks they qualify for assistance should contact the Steuben County Office of the Aging and the Avoca Methodist Church for more information.
