ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Registration is now open for parents and guardians to sign their children up for Chemung County's Summer Cohesion programming. Cohesion is a six-week-long summer recreational, educational and cultural enrichment program. The program is open to kids between the ages of four and 12.

Sign ups are happening online on a rolling basis this year. Registration for the site at Ridge Road Elementary opened Monday at 9 a.m. As of publishing, there are no more spots left at that location. Four other sites are still available.

Registration for the First Baptist Church in Horseheads opens Tuesday at 9 a.m. Thomas Edison High School registration goes live Tuesday at 1 p.m. Parents can enroll their children at the Fassett Elementary site Wednesday at 9 a.m., or for Broadway Elementary at 1 p.m.

There are also ways to cut down on costs, set up by the Veterans Affairs Office.

"They reached out to us and said, 'Hey, we have some funding available...we would love to make the Summer Cohesion Program free for any children of veterans,'" Dave Ellis, the Executive Director for the Chemung County Youth Bureau, said. "We were able to work out something with them."

Ellis said the Chemung County Youth Bureau has always tried to keep costs low for the program to make it affordable for families who work on a tight budget. Breaking it down, the program costs about $5 a day for six weeks.

"Summertime is a time where...the kids want a break from school," he said. "They need some structured time, a place to go where it's safe, a place where they can interact with their peers, and enjoy summer."

The Summer Cohesion Program has been a part of Chemung County's summer agenda for 50 years.

Interested parents or guardians can enroll by clicking here. There is a $150 fee for each child, unless parents prequalified for a reduced fee.

Summer Cohesion runs Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. from July 9 to August 16. Around 600 children participate in the program each year.
