UPDATE (5/13): The Schuyler County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WENY News Monday that initial information sent out about Rexford Smith's arrest was incorrect. Smith, also known as Ely, turned himself in after law enforcement called him and asked him to do so. A release sent to media and posted to the Sheriff's Office Facebook page on May 8th erroneously stated that Smith was "located". 


DIX, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Schuyler County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that they have found and caught the man behind the police presence Saturday that closed Route 414 for almost 10 hours.

The Sheriff's Office is charging Rexford Smith, also known as Ely, with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a misdemeanor and Menacing.

The Schuyler County Sheriff's Office says they were dispatched Saturday around 7:45 a.m. to Mill Hill Road in the Town of Dix for reported gunfire. No one was injured in that incident.

Smith is in the Schuyler County Jail awaiting arraignment. Officials say their investigation is still ongoing.
